Sports Report - May 2023

To start I need to make a correction:  Our snooker team who won Zone consisted of Glen Ehrlich, Neil Pratt, Brian Stroud and Doug Lappin.

Sorry about the mix-up.

Congratulations to Mark Johnston and Darryl Doolittle in reaching Provincial 8 ball recently.

Mixed darts was held at our branch and was a great success with all branches from our Zone being represented.  Congratulations to Ray and Terrie Gubbins on moving on to District.

Our branch was well represented for all the other Dart events in our Zone but unfortunately no team moved on.  This concludes indoor Sports for our Zone.

Golf, Horseshoes and Washer Toss will follow this summer for the outdoor portion of Zone play.  Keep an eye on the Sports bulletin board for signup sheets.

Within the branch, most Winter Sports are winding down and will be concluded by May.  I believe Summer Darts, Golf and possibly Horseshoes will be starting.  Please keep an eye on the bulletin board and our website for further details.

Sports Report - August 2022

Summer has arrived and many of our Legion activities have died down with the warmer weather.

There is summer mixed Darts on Thursday as well as Duffers golf.

Zone and District Horseshoes and Ring Toss have been played with our teams of Brett Taylor and Janice Mancini and Sue Sklepowicz and Barb Smith

participating.  Sue and Barb are moving on to Singles and Doubles Ring Toss.

Brett and Janice are moving on in Doubles Ring Toss.  Barb and Janice placed 2nd in District Horseshoes and are moving on to Provincial Horseshoes

on 5th August, 2022.

The full competitive sports schedule will be coming out soon for 2023 district sports.  Pleases note that some of these events will be starting in the latter

part of 2022.

In-house sports activities will be starting up in September.  Please check the Legion web page for registration dates.  As a side note, the Men’s Dart

League was thin last season (6 teams), so we are looking for more guys to play this year.  I am also sure that all the other leagues could use players as well.

That’s all for now. Keep an eye on the Legion web site and the Sports Bulletin board for updates.  See you in September

Stan Sklepowicz - 2nd Vice President and Sports Chair

Sports Report - May 2022

In-house Sports have finally resumed with the opening of Branch 36, but our winter season

of Darts, Snooker and Shuffleboard leagues are winding down.

We are hoping to have a full slate of Sports activities for the summer.

There’s good news - District Sports has approved some inter-branch competitive activities such as Horseshoes for adults, seniors and women, and also Washer Toss.  The sign-up sheet for these events will be on the Sports Bullytin Board next to the side door so have a look if you are interested.

I am sure Duffers Golf will have a notice for interested golfers coming soon.

Hopefully, by the fall, Sports will have resumed to pre-covid levels.

Sports Report - February 2022

Hello Everyone

We successfully restarted our in-house sports in October with minimal difficulty once everyone got used to the new protocols.

In November, it was announced by Provincial Command that all competitive sports were being cancelled - this was followed by our district and zone.

Unfortunately, as of writing this, things have been shut down again.

Hopefully this only temporary and we can resume enjoying getting out of the house and socializing.

Stay safe and Happy New Year

Sports Report - November 2017

This is going to be different from my usual sports report.  If you need any sport information please check our in-house board or

online.

Keeping with the type of sports and the Legion/Military I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Invictus Games last month.

What an inspiring event to see these wounded warriors overcoming their injuries and returning to physical activity was amazing.

The Invictus Games were originated with Prince Harry three years ago.  He felt that it could be a way for injured soldiers to have

a physical outlet and goal that would help in their recovery both physical and mental.

When it was announced that the Games were coming to Toronto I knew I had to try to become a part of the games.  I felt that this

was a wonderful opportunity to show some support and gratitude to our military family.

Throughout the games the Royal Canadian Legion had a visible presence at the games and in the media.  It would be wonderful

if the Legion could carry on the momentum generated by these Games and find further ways to support our wounded, ill and

injured military personnel and veterans.

Overall the Invictus Games were a life changing event, not only for the participants and also us, the volunteers.

This is the Poppy Issue of the Bulletin and the Poppy is our way of showing remembrance of those who served our country past and present. Please take time out to help sell Poppies and or visit some of our older members who are in the hospital or at home. Let them know you care.

Sports Report - August 2009

I hope everyone had a great summer.  After the completion of the last sports event of my first year as Sports Officer, I would like to say it has been a good year at Branch 36.

We will be hosting Zone and District Snooker and Zone Euchre thanks to our winning teams.  We also won District 8-Ball and District Youth Darts.  When we bring these tournaments back it is a great benefit to our Legion, so when the 2010 sign-up sheets go up on the Sports Board, take a look and sign-up to play.

The house leagues will be starting in September and all leagues will welcome new players.  Come out and have some fun.

The Saturday afternoon horseshoes has been lots of fun and will continue as weather permits.  The horseshoe pits were made for members to use at any time, not just Saturdays. Horseshoes, scoreboards and rakes are there for your use.  All I ask is that when you're finished your games you rake the pits and put the equipment away.

I would like to take this time to thank the ladies who volunteered to cook breakfast and lunch for the tournament, GREAT JOB LADIES.

On April 18th we will have two teams representing the branch.  Our winning euchre team will be in Chippawa and our winning 10 pin team will be in Windsor.  Good Luck to both teams

October 2008 Sports Report

By now most of the house leagues are under way, but there is always room for one more, so drop in and check on the league of your choice.

Watch the sports board in November for the posting of all inter-Legion sports.

We need more participation so sign up.  Each and every sport gives you a chance to meet and form a friendship with other Legion members.

The more participants we have in an event the better chance of winning and hosting it the next year. When we host an event it is a great financial help to our legion, so the theme for 2009 is:

"LET'S BRING IT BACK IN 2010."

Please remember when you sign up, and the Legion pays your entrance fee you must attend the event, or have someone take your place.  Those who sign up and do not attend after the entrance fee has been paid will be charged back the amount paid by the Legion.
